The safe transportation of district students to and from school is to be of primary concern to all school officials in the administration of the school district’s Pupil Transportation Program. In an effort to increase the safety of students being transported through the District’s Transportation System, the Uinta County School District Number One Board of Trustees has authorized the development and implementation of a School Bus Driver Training Program in the District. Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Transportation Director shall insure that each school bus driver successfully completes the School Bus Driver Training Program and that records pertaining to the amount and type of training completed by each individual driver be maintained on file in the District.

As a minimum, the training program shall meet the standards as outlined in Wyoming State Law 21-3-111 (a) (XVII). That is: six (6) hours of annual training. Subjects may include, but are not limited to:

1. Daily inspection of the school bus.

2. Handling the vehicle.

3. Handling traffic conditions.

4. Handling weather conditions.

5. Handling hazardous situations.

6. Fire and emergency equipment and procedures.

7. Railroad crossings.

8. Accidents.

9. First Aid.

10. Loading and unloading procedures.

Six (6) hours of classroom work may be taken from the School Bus Driver Training Handbook.

Activity bus drivers must receive an additional two (2) hours of training.

According to the School Bus Driver Training Handbook, the handicapped/special education drivers shall be provided with inservice training programs to acquaint them with the needs of the children they are transporting and skills to meet their needs. This training shall be provided within the first six (6) months of the school year. Documentation will be made in their individual training files.

In addition to complying with the mandatory requirements established under the District’s School Bus Driver Training Program, all school bus drivers in the District shall provide the District with written proof of passage of a Department Of Transportation physical examination as specified by state law.
